Beyond Benagil: The Algarve's Best Experiences
The Benagil sea cave is one of Portugal's most photographed natural wonders — a seaside grotto with a skylight hole in its roof, reachable only by boat or kayak from the coastline near Lagoa. But the area around Benagil offers so much more than this single landmark.
Beaches Worth the Visit
Praia da Marinha (8km from Lagoa) is consistently ranked among Europe's most beautiful beaches, with its cliff-backed sands, turquoise water, and natural arches. Praia do Carvoeiro (7km) is a charming cove framed by the picturesque village above. For something quieter, Praia de Albandeira (12km) offers a photo-worthy limestone arch and a beachfront restaurant.
Coastal Hiking
The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys Trail) is one of Europe's best coastal walks. Starting near Carvoeiro and winding along dramatic cliff edges, the trail offers breathtaking views of hidden coves, sea stacks, and the deep blue Atlantic. It's approximately 6km one way and moderate in difficulty.
Water Activities
Kayaking to Benagil cave is the most popular activity, but you can also try stand-up paddleboarding, diving (especially around Marinha's underwater caves and arches), and boat tours along the entire coastline. Several operators run trips from Carvoeiro and Ferragudo.
Where to Stay
For a base that matches the beauty of the coastline, Casa da Fé in central Lagoa puts you within 7-12km of all these attractions. The Arabic-inspired townhouse offers 3 ensuite bedrooms, a plunge pool, and a design aesthetic that makes coming home after a day of exploration just as rewarding as the adventure itself.
